Emotionally Focused Therapy - Counseling for Couples to Improve Relationships
Couples consider counseling when they run into a problem that they can’t solve on their own. Sometimes the underlying relationship is still strong. Other times the relationship is hurting and they aren’t sure if they can recover.
When relationships are in trouble, couples have usually fallen into negative patterns driven by anger, hurt, withdrawal, frustration and loneliness. Understanding these patterns logically can be helpful but real change requires changing the feelings as well. For this reason, my approach to couples counseling is based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is a structured approach to helping couples reorganize their emotional responses, creating new, more positive interaction cycles based on a secure and loving connection. This approach has proven effectiveness. Research studies find that with EFT, more than 70% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements.
Elizabeth does EFT-based counseling with straight and LGBT couples who are married or in a committed partnership. Premarital counseling and divorce assessment are also available.
If you would like help with your relationship, contact Elizabeth for an initial appointment to see if this is a good fit for you.
